Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM) is observed annually worldwide from October 1 to 31 to raise awareness about breast cancer, encourage early detection, support patients, and promote research for prevention and treatment. The 2025 theme is “Every Story is Unique, Every Journey Matters.”
- Breast Cancer Awareness Month began in October 1985 as a collaborative initiative between the American Cancer Society and pharmaceutical company Imperial Chemical Industries, aiming to educate the public about breast cancer and promote early detection.
- October is celebrated internationally as “Pink Month,” emphasizing awareness campaigns, education, and advocacy to support women and men affected by breast cancer worldwide.
Main Point :- (i) The pink ribbon is the universal symbol of breast cancer awareness, representing hope, courage, and solidarity with patients and survivors. It is used extensively in campaigns, merchandise, and events during BCAM.
(ii) The pink ribbon emerged as a breast cancer awareness symbol in the early 1990s in the United States of America (USA). It gained widespread recognition in 1992 through campaigns led by Estée Lauder and Self Magazine, becoming synonymous with global breast cancer advocacy.
