SBI Report 2025: Maharashtra Tops UPI Usage as Transactions Surge Across India.

In August 2025, the State Bank of India (SBI)’s Economic Research Department (ERD) released its latest report highlighting the rapid growth of Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions. The report showed a sharp increase in both transaction value and volume, with Maharashtra emerging as the leading state in UPI usage.
- In terms of value, the report noted that the average daily UPI transactions increased from ₹75,743 crore in January 2025 to ₹80,919 crore in July 2025. By August 2025, this figure further surged to ₹90,446 crore, marking a significant jump within just eight months.
- In terms of volume, UPI transactions recorded a major rise, with daily average transaction volume increasing by 127 million. This brought the total average daily volume to 675 million transactions in August 2025 compared with January 2025, reflecting India’s accelerating shift toward digital payments.
- State-wise, Maharashtra has emerged as the top-performing state in UPI usage, accounting for 9.8% of the total transaction volume in July 2025. It was followed by Karnataka (5.5%), Uttar Pradesh (5.3%), Telangana (4.1%), and Tamil Nadu (4%). This confirms Maharashtra’s dominance in digital financial adoption.
Main Point :- (i) In terms of transaction value, Maharashtra also secured the top spot, with 1,905 million transactions worth ₹2.30 lakh crore, accounting for 9.2% of the national share. Karnataka ranked second with ₹1.45 lakh crore (5.8%), followed by Uttar Pradesh with ₹1.31 lakh crore (5.3%), Telangana (5.1%), and Tamil Nadu (4.7%).
(ii) At the banking level, SBI emerged as the leading remitter bank with 5.2 billion transactions, which is 3.4 times higher than HDFC Bank, the second-largest remitter.
(iii) Yes Bank Limited stood out as the top beneficiary bank, recording nearly 8 billion received transactions, reinforcing its position in UPI settlements.
