The United Nations (UN)’s World Oceans Day (WOD) is observed annually on June 8 across the globe to raise awareness about the impact of human activities on the oceans, inspire a global movement for ocean conservation, and encourage sustainable ocean management practices.


      - WOD 2025 was hosted by the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS) under the Office of Legal Affairs of the UN, in collaboration with Oceanic Global, a non-profit organisation dedicated to ocean protection.

      - The theme for WOD 2025, “Wonder: Sustaining What Sustains Us,” underscores the ocean’s awe-inspiring beauty, profound mystery, and its indispensable role in sustaining life on Earth.

      - As part of the WOD 2025 observance, the 3rd United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC3) is scheduled to be held in Nice, France from June 9 to 13, 2025, under the theme: “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean.”

Main Point :-   (i) The concept of World Oceans Day was first proposed by Canada on June 8, 1992, during the Earth Summit (United Nations Conference on Environment and Development – UNCED) held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

      (ii) On December 5, 2008, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted Resolution A/RES/63/111, officially recognizing June 8 as World Oceans Day.

(iii) The first official celebration of World Oceans Day was held on June 8, 2009.
