The United Nations (UN) observes Russian Language Day every year on June 6 to celebrate the cultural richness of the Russian language and highlight its importance as a symbol of national identity and literary heritage.


      - The date coincides with the 226th birth anniversary of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin (1799–1837), widely acclaimed as the father of modern Russian literature. Pushkin was a celebrated poet, novelist, and playwright whose works profoundly shaped Russian literary traditions.

     

     

Main Point :-   (i) The UN’s “Language Days” initiative was launched in 2010 by the Department of Public Information (now the Department of Global Communications), inspired by International Mother Language Day.

      (ii) In 2017, the UN General Assembly officially welcomed the celebration of language days for all six official UN languages, including Russian.

(iii) UNESCO, during its 215th Executive Board session in 2022, emphasized the significance of recognizing and promoting language days to support cultural and linguistic diversity.
